Caspia Huntington Davies, Apprentice Engineering Manufacturing Technician
As National Careers Week comes to a close, we’re delighted to spotlight Caspia Huntington Davies, an Apprentice Engineering Manufacturing Technician at Lucy Electric. Caspia’s journey reflects the curiosity, hands‑on passion, and problem‑solving mindset that sit at the heart of engineering at Lucy Group.
Apprenticeship over university
For Caspia, choosing an apprenticeship over a full‑time university route came down to learning by doing. “In my second year of A Levels, I knew I wanted to continue learning, but I was ready to move on from the classroom. An apprenticeship meant I could gain real experience, not just theory, in engineering.” This blend of academic study and practical application created the ideal environment for her to grow.
A Day in the Life
While completing full‑time college before starting her rotations, Caspia’s days are packed with hands‑on learning. She spends time building electrical projects, machining with mills and lathes, and completing hand‑fit tasks that often become useful pieces in the workshop or at home. Each week includes a dedicated Level 4 theory day covering subjects from Material Science to Responsibilities of an Engineer.
Rebuilding Engines
One of her most exciting experiences has been the introduction to Mechanical Maintenance. “We recently stripped and rebuilt engines in pairs. I found it fascinating learning how a system works when I use it every day in my car.” This gave her valuable insight into real‑world engineering mechanisms while building practical confidence.
Overcoming a Skills Gap
Early on, Caspia noticed a skills gap compared to peers with more practical experience. “I worried about keeping up. But by asking (a lot of) questions, I became much more confident with tools and machines.” Her curiosity and willingness to learn embody the growth mindset we value across Lucy Group.
Final Word
Her advice for future engineers is simple: “Ask questions. Engineering and apprenticeships aren’t about ‘right’ answers, they’re about working toward solutions, including using other people’s knowledge.” She also highlights the supportive culture around her. “My colleagues share the goal of developing as a team and supporting each other’s learning. The shift from school to work was much smoother because I always felt comfortable asking for help.”
As National Careers Week wraps up, Caspia’s story reminds us that career paths are shaped by curiosity, confidence, and the courage to learn through questions.
